About the Event
The history and current affairs of Africa are most often narrated from an ‘other’ perspective and does not always tell her true story. Schools and society in Scotland rely on analysis and media coverage of the problems facing the continent which portray an inescapably bleak future - a dark continent which no one should associate with. The images painted and historical relationships with African can influence how young people of African descent are treated and compromise them achieving their potential. This historical overview of Africa will introduce young people of African descent to an insider’s narrative of the history of Africa - from colonialism to neo-colonialism. It will give young people the confidence to challenge existing stereotypes and inequalities.
‘Growth is brought about by people, not by money. Money, and the wealth it represents, is the result and not the basis of growth’ (Julius Nyerere, ex-President of Tanzania)
